For many, sharing intimate details of domestic violence survival along with the trials and tribulations on their road to recovery can be very therapeutic; especially when you get to see how much your story and words can connect and support another. The abuse survivors I’ve met and talked with have shared the most painful moments of their lives in hopes of preventing another person from walking a moment in a life like theirs. The last-straw.com has become a safe place to share stories and support each other. You were isolated during the abuse; don’t isolate yourself during your recovery.
I was recently contacted by Diva Communications in regards to a documentary on domestic violence and religion that will air on ABC affiliated stations in January 2011. After seeing the supportive community we have created here they have asked that readers offer our support and stories in hopes of bringing awareness to the ever popular topic of domestic violence.
The documentary will focus on questions such as were you able to go to your clergy for help and guidance on an abusive relationship or were you ever involved in a faith based program that was designed to inform about potential partner violence, your input would be beneficial to others. Women of all faiths are welcomed.
I ask that you only offer your story if you are in a safe place to do so. By safe I mean you are no longer living with your abuser and you know that by sharing on air you will not bring any harm to you or your family. Most importantly, because your recovery is of the utmost importance, only share if you feel it will help your recovery and not set you backwards.
A portion of the documentary will focus on tween and teen violence as well. Sadly, our little girls are being abused by their boyfriends at a growing rate, all in the name of puppy love.
If you are in the metropolitan NY area and are out of abuse and can be contacted by phone and email and would be willing to talk on camera, your face, voice and identify masked at all times if you fear repercussions from telling your story.
I personally spoke with Debra at Diva Communications and feel confident that your best interest is at heart, as she too is a passionate woman. If you are interested in participating in this documentary please contact Debra directly at firstname.lastname@example.org
If you have never posted on this blog and would like to share your story in my upcoming book please post your story here as well. By leaving your story or comments anywhere on this blog you are giving me permission to use it in any media form. I only use first names unless you ask me to share your full name.
Love & Peace,
