You live in daily fear that the man you live with may kill you at any moment. Why on earth would you think a thin sheet of paper that reads protective order will save you? It is not the paper that saves you, it is your reporting every violation of the order and calling the police no matter how small the violation is. IMPORTANT: that you request a hearing after getting the order as a judge will have all guns removed and he will no longer be able to own a gun. In many cases this can stop sudden impulse of abuse.
My advice, if you live in fear that a man will kill you get as far away from him as possible. Unless you can afford 24 hour body guards to protect you then I say get away. Move. I get that this sound easier than it is but adding some distance will give you a little security of escape. You can only stay in the shelter for so long.
I was lucky, my husband was too drunk and lived 45 minutes from me so he harrassed me over the phone and in my dreams but never in person after he was removed and the protective order was taken out.
He died within 2 years from the alcohol so I am one of the lucky few that doesn’t need to renew the order every year for the rest of my life. Many are not so lucky.
A restraining order works if he fears the law and the thought of jail. If not, it is just a sheet of paper. No matter what, watch the tape, read the story, take out the order and then do what you can to protect yourself. Never let your guard down as much as you can not live in fear, it is still what it is.
Be safe, be careful.
Love & Peace,
