Music has always helped me through the tough spots when I can’t seem to focus. I will post songs that seem to bring me back. If you have a song that brings you inner peace or focus please share it here and I will post the video if possible.
I have posted several links with songs that help me and some that I have listened to for years. I decided to combine them all in one easy to find location for you. Save them on your own or come back here from time to time as I plan to add to this section on a regular basis as I come across a song that I know will help you no matter what stage you are at. You will soon realize how much music can help you heal no matter what you are dealing with. Start your own mix cd.
Martina McBride – Independence Day: To this day this video empowers me. I can still remember sitting on my couch with the abuser in the room. As I bit my lip I would sing this loudly in my head, I would pretend that I didn’t even notice that the song was on. When I hear it now it brings me strength, although I didn’t burn down the house, I finally was able to leave him on my own and stand up to him. Now when I hear the song it makes me stronger than ever.

Kelly Clarkson – Stronger
Kelly Clarkson – Because of you: this song somehow empowers me to be better, to not repeat the mistakes of the past. The video says so much about how your childhood greatly affects your adulthood, you can repeat it or change it. Let me know what you think.
Kelly Clarkson again – Since you’ve been gone: great get over him song. I love it. I highly recommend most of Kelly’s songs, they are really inspiring.
Natalie Cole – Someone that I use to love: We often deal with the guilt of loving someone that has abused us, almost killed us. Accept that you love him, then let him go. This song, if you really watch the words on the screen is very moving. Find a song to help you accept what was and decide what never will be again. When you have true love, it is all that you need. When the other person doesn’t treat you with the respect you deserve, true love is never going to be enough.
Helen Reddy – That ain’t no way to treat a lady: Respect yourself, the rest will follow. This song is a nice reminder.
Helen Reddy – I am Woman: I was singing this when I was maybe 8 and had no idea how much meaning the song would have for me.
Wilson Phillips – Hold On: This song has inspired me for as long as I can remember, I would listen to if often while living in abuse, it was sometimes the only encouragement that kept me going. Now, years later it helps me see how far I have come and what I have control over. I can remember when I would listen to this song over and over for an hour or more to get me through the days. I encourage you to find songs that do that for you.
Kelly Clarkson – Just love the gal – Breakaway: listen, says it all about moving on and taking control of your life.
Reader Suggestion: Thanks to Erica – Jewel’s Strong Woman: this is the first time I have heard the song and love it, think you will too, I love the line will love myself more than anyone else:
Great one Deborah, I love this song and hadn’t listened to it in a while. Added it to my Pandora.
recently suggested – great words, thank you Cait!

What music inspires you these days? My 9, soon to be 10yr old daughter has decided to sing for school on Monday, she has been singing since she was barely 2 and has the voice of an angel, I know all parents say that, but trust me, would be my life you will be hearing her someday. She going to sing the song from Frozen, not sure but should be called, Let it go as that is often said in the song. I just sat in awe last night as I helped her practice. Yes, her voice stuns me but her excitement over that one on one attention meant more to her. Sing, dance and play with your children, keeps you young and they really feel that love.
What songs do your children sing to you?
Love & Peace,
Rebecca

Dear Chrissy,
I was so happy to hear from you yet so sad in the next breath. I am so sorry for all that you are going through. It is a scary, alone time. We are all here for you, we don’t judge, we have been where you are and understand your pain, guilt, anger and all that comes with it. You stumbled upon here for a reason. I liked what you wrote, first baby step to believing in yourself. No more guilt, it consumes you, I struggled with it for years for the fact that I had left my child with this man, his own father. Once I was able to let that go, I could finally begin to heal inside.
That the time you have to work towards the life you want. Live each day to the fullest, what dreams to you have Chrissy? Don’t let what he did define your future. It happened, I don’t say get over it, but go through the mourning process, be angry, cry, then write, read, learn what your heart wants out of life and start there. Take care of yourself, you matter most of all.
I hope to hear from you again and can’t wait to hear of your growth.
Love & Peace,
Rebecca

My abuser is my husband and business partner of 24 years – I was his investor – without my money, he would be nothing – he is a pretty well known architect now. On my 21st wedding anniversary, I blasted and danced around the kitchen to George Michael’s Freedom. ” I don’t belong to you…and you don’t belong to me. Yeah, yeah, yeah.” It felt great. ( He had been out of the house for a year, but it takes time for the ruts of bondedness in the brain to unravel.)
